Set in the 1950s, this uneven adaptation of an Agatha Christie mystery centers on the return Dr. Arthur Calgary (Sutherland) to England after a two-year research stint in the Antarctic. When he attempts to return an address book to a hitchhiker he had given a ride to two years previously,

Dr. Calgary learns that the young man was executed for the murder of his mother (Dunaway), committed on the very night he had ridden with the scientist. Realizing that he was the young man's alibi, Dr. Calgary tries to unearth the real murderer. In the Christie tradition, his investigation reveals

a surplus of suspects, most of whom are family members and friends. Dunaway, shown only in black-and-white flashbacks, delivers an especially listless performance. The rest of the cast, however, acquit themselves well, particularly Sutherland, who is convincingly concerned as he clumsily pursues

the truth. Dave Brubeck's jazz score reinforces the story's setting.
