A dull adaptation of Gorky's autobiography, this sequel to THE CHILDHOOD OF MAXIM GORKY stars Lyarsky as the now-grown author who finds himself trapped as a serf working for a rich family. He escapes and finds a job as a dishwasher on a small riverboat. Eventually we watch as Gorky (born

Alexei Peshkov) grows to manhood and begins his battle for freer education. The third film in this trilogy, UNIVERSITY OF LIFE, was released in the US in 1941. Interestingly, Gorky was quite an advocate of the new medium of motion pictures; during his exile in Capri, he watched a French silent

comedy with his friend, V.I. Lenin. Later, he made post-Revolution plans for a panoply of historical films, plans which were never realized by the new Soviet film industry. The great writer might have been describing this very picture when he wrote--upon first seeing Lumiere's cinematograph in

1896--"This mute, grey life finally begins to disturb and depress you."
