Hopelessly stagebound adaptation of a once-popular play is saved by the timeless performance of Arliss as the title character. Arliss stars as the elderly managing director of a shipbuilding firm whose harsh treatment of his daughter leads to his ultimate doom. Preferring to shower the

teen-age children of his illegitimate son with affection, Arliss makes a fraudulent financial deal that he feels will ensure their future. Caught with his hand in the till, Arliss decides the only honorable way to avoid scandal is to commit suicide. He arranges to be served a bountiful gourmet

meal, the consumption of which means certain death. He eats the meal, and, after finishing a last after dinner liqueur, dies quietly in his armchair. Visually dull (the different acts of the play are easily discernible by the set changes within the film illustrating the nearly insufferable lack of

movement), but an interesting chance to see Arliss at work. The death scene is almost duplicated in DIAMOND JIM.
