Beloved character actor Sakall was given the biggest role of his career in OH, YOU BEAUTIFUL DOLL when he was cast as popular turn-ofthe-century songwriter Fred Fisher (whose real name was Breitenbach) in this musical biography. Playing fast-and-loose with the facts, the story chronicles

Fisher's efforts at becoming a serious composer, though his work goes unrecognized. When Sakall hooks up with song publisher Stevens, who advises him to arrange his melodies in a more up-tempo manner and sell them as popular tunes, Sakall changes his name (so as not to ruin his chances with the

highbrow community) and soon becomes the rage with tunes like the title song, "Peg 'O My Heart," "Chicago," and "There's a Broken Heart for Every Light on Broadway." This career change meets with great approval from Sakall's daughter, Haver, who is a singer and dancer. Wealthy, but unhappy with

his station in the musical world, Sakall remains in seclusion until a respected conductor, Franz, decides to perform one of his pieces at Aeolian Hall. Excited by the acceptance of his tunes in the serious musical world, Sakall comes out of hiding and regains his pride as a composer. Other songs

include: "I Want You to Want Me to Want You" (Bob Schafer, Alfred Bryan), "Come Josephine in My Flying Machine," "Who Paid the Rent for Mrs. Rip Van Winkle?" (Bryan), "Daddy You've Been More Than a Mother to Me," "When I Get You Alone Tonight" (Joseph McCarthy, Joe Goodwin), "Dardanella" (Felix

Bernard, Johnny S. Black, Fred Fisher), "Ireland Must Be Heaven for My Mother Came from There" (McCarthy, Johnson).
