Bizarre, loosely conceived sequel to IF..., in which Malcolm McDowell again plays Mick Travis, now a Candide-like coffee salesman bent on achieving corporate success. Travis's Kafkaesque, state-of-the-nation odyssey takes in a businessmen's sex club; a military camp where he's arrested and

tortured; a medical research center where experiments include attaching a human head to a pig's body; an affair with the hippie daughter (Helen Mirren) of a corrupt industrialist (Ralph Richardson); and a scheme involving the sale of Napalm to an African nation that lands Travis in prison.

A variety of framing and distancing devices give a determinedly modernist dimension to Travis's blackly humorous adventures: his travels are punctuated by musical interludes, courtesy of Alan Price, that provide a neo-Brechtian commentary on the action; scenes are divided by blackouts that

highlight the episodic nature of the proceedings; members of Anderson's informal repertory company each play several different roles; and Travis's exploits end with him being selected to play the lead role in the film we have just seen. A lucky man, indeed.
