of rock'n'roll. Apramian intercuts live concert footage and interviews with Joan Jett, Courtney Love and members of such bands as L7, Babes in Toyland and Lunachicks. She gets beyond the novelty appeal of "chicks with guitars," and gives the women an opportunity to do something they're rarely

allowed to do in the mainstream press: talk. And talk they do about what it meant to be a fan-girl mustering the courage to cross the footlights and take the stage; audience reactions once they got there; how they subsequently saw themselves as role models and women; and much, much more. Apramian

is a psychotherapist by profession, and she uses her skills to elicit some fascinating comments from her subjects. Unfortunately, she's much more interested in gender roles and rock archetypes than the music itself. The big question goes unanswered: So girls can rock as hard as guys. Now what?
