This is the good first sequel to Wes Craven's terrifying horror film of 1984, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Directed by Jack Sholder, the story continues five years after the evil spirit of neighborhood child-murderer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund)--who had been invading the dreams of the

community's teenagers and killing them--has been defeated by a clever young woman. Now the Walsh family has moved into the cursed house on Elm Street, and their teenage son, Jesse (Mark Patton), begins having horrible nightmares featuring Freddy. A worthy successor to the original movie, NIGHTMARE

PART 2 is surprisingly optimistic and moral. The power of love and kindness wins out over evil and violence--something not often seen in modern horror films. The effects here are stunning, never halting the flow of the narrative to let the viewer gawk at the high-tech work involved. The young cast

gives solid performances (though it takes some time to get over Kim Myers' strong resemblance to Meryl Streep). Though not as thought-provoking and stylish as its predecessor, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET PART 2 is much better than expected.
