Neither a buddy-buddy action-comedy nor a pyrotechnical showcase of explosions and stunts, NEXT OF KIN--an intelligently made and moodily atmospheric action melodrama--provides solid, satisfying entertainment while demonstrating just how effective a fully realized genre film can be.

Chicago cop Truman Gates (Patrick Swayze) has alienated his rural Kentucky kinfolk, especially older brother Briar (Liam Neeson), by moving to the big city and convincing younger brother Gerald (Bill Paxton) to do so also. But then Gerald runs afoul of Chicago's Mafia organization, led by John

Isabella (Andreas Katsulas). While the plot mechanics of NEXT OF KIN are not appreciably better (or worse) than those of many other films of the same genre, the movie's meticulous execution make it a particularly accomplished effort. Major themes, characters, and milieus are explored in

fascinating detail. The assured, painstaking direction of John Irvin fixes upon the parallel of the two families, lending their inner workings and rituals an almost epic quality that propels the film. Michael Jenning's screenplay provides well-motivated action, emotion, and humor. Swayze offers a

solid, low-key performance. The other actors also contribute fine characterizations, but Neeson impresses most with his intense portrayal of the brooding older brother.
