Adults who melt at the sight of cute animals will want to find some youngish children and hightail it to this live-action, fluffy dog story. Poor little Muffin, a thoroughly adorable golden retriever pup who imagines himself a warrior

dog named Napoleon, flees his cushy home in Sydney for an outback adventure. His search for the wild dog pack he hopes to join is interrupted by a series of encounters with such exotic creatures as a grumpy koala, a hostile frill-necked lizard, a sulky echidna ("I can't drink that water -- you

touched it with your dog lips!"), a quartet of mocking lorikeets, a condescending frog, some skittish wallabies, a homicidal cat, a clutch of vacationing penguins and a pair of dingo puppies named Sid and Nancy. He's taken under the wing of a klutzy parrot named Birdo Lucci, who tries to teach

him the ways of the wild things, but Muffin finally comes to the conclusion that there's no place like home. The story drags in places, and it's all a bit tame for older kids. But youngsters and sentimental parents will be charmed, and the movie's overall sweetness is mitigated by the winningly

dyspeptic attitude of the Australian wildlife. "My stomach growls louder than that," sneers the koala when Napoleon tries to get tough. There are a few insipid songs, and one great number about killing rabbits ("Make them scream for Beatrix Potter"). The voice cast is largely Australian (including

rude comedian Barry Humphries in his Dame Edna Everidge persona), with Joan Rivers making a guest appearance as a screeching yenta of a penguin.
