When Ruth McKenney and her sister came to New York's Greenwich Village from Columbus, Ohio, the older sister took many notes about their experiences and wrote stories that eventually were the basis for a hit Broadway comedy. This film version is much like the stageplay, following sisters

Ruth (Rosalind Russell) and Eileen Sherwood (Janet Blair) after they move into a basement apartment in the Village. Their neighbors are a nutty group, including "the Wreck" (Gordon Jones), a former Georgia Tech football player forever recounting his days as one of the "Rambling Wrecks," his wife

(Jeff Donnell), and his mother (Minna Phillips). The sisters' apartment is busy with hot and cold running subplots including Eileen's flirtation with a journalist (Allyn Joslyn) and Ruth's attempts to sell her stories to an editor (Brian Aherne). The Three Stooges appear briefly as workmen digging

a new subway who come up through the basement floor. The film presents an entertaining series of incidents and character sketches, all of which are funny and true to life.
