This delightful little charmer features a very young Rooney as the pint-sized King of Ruritania. Bored with a high-level cabinet meeting, the youngster walks out and ends up with Mix, the proprietor of a Wild West show. Rooney (as well as the audience) is then treated to a great display of

ropin', ridin', and shootin'. Holmes plays an evil minister who wants the throne for himself. He kidnaps the boy ruler and tosses him into a slowly-filling pool. Mix and his cohorts (including Olympic hero Thorpe) come riding to the castle just in the nick of time. Offbeat and as enjoyable as they

come, MY PAL, THE KING has just the right mixture of whimsy and action, successfully pulled off on all levels. The direction keeps the melodramatic plot moving nicely. Mix's Wild West show doesn't seem like it's grafted onto the story. It's all very natural and just a good old time at the movies.

The kids will eat it up.
