Set against the backdrop of a Courcheval ski resort, this tale of sexual morality is relatively tame in comparison to Bertrand Blier's more anarchic Gerard Depardieu-Patrick Dewaere pairings, GOING PLACES (1974) and GET OUT YOUR HANDKERCHIEFS (1978). This time out, Blier's menage a trois is

more polished and comfortable than before, a reflection of both its 1980s sensibilities and of the film's snow-white setting. Viviane (Isabelle Huppert) is a perky young woman with a predilection for stripping off her bulky ski clothes and wandering around in red lingerie. While on holiday, she

has a one-night stand with dullard Pascal (Thierry Lhermitte), owner of the resort's ski shop. The next morning, Pascal brings his best pal, Mickey (Coluche)--a cynical bear of a man whose friendship with Pascal is the only thing in the world he values--into the bedroom to have a look at his

latest conquest, the nude, sleeping Viviane. Naturally, since this is both a French film and a Blier film, Mickey and Viviane make love, putting the latter in a terrible predicament. Blier's great talent is to somehow convert misogynistic situations such as this into warm and charming pictures.

While the characters may have questionable sexual morals, their deeper concerns are for strong bonds of friendship--all three lament their inability to be friends without the interference of sex. Although Lhermitte plays a less than personable character, the ebullient Huppert and the portly

Coluche (a superpopular French comedian who died tragically in 1986) more than make up for the casting imbalance. (In French; English subtitles.)
