This tale of love and revenge is played out with little imagination against the backdrop of a freak show. Walthall is a magician who is caught up in a mystery after Flint, an anti-alcohol crusading politician, is murdered. There are the usual myriad suspects, and some trouble determining

the caliber of the weapon. It ultimately proves that Walthall is the killer who had taken revenge on Brent by pointing all the evidence toward him. Brent had betrayed Walthall's late wife years before and the magician promised her he would get even. This is a confusing thriller without any thrills

at all. The carnival-freak show atmosphere is never exploited for its wealth of creepy goings on, and coupled with the laughably awful acting, the film quickly goes nowhere. Walthall had been one of D.W. Griffith's favorite actors in the silent era, but like this once great director, Walthall's

career took a devastating plunge with the advent of sound.
