Paul Merrick (Bing Crosby) is a successful songwriter who would rather play golf--with his butler, Haggerty (Tom Ewell), as his caddy--than write. But when his laid-back lifestyle begins to threaten his financial solvency, Alex Conway (Charles Coburn), an old-time producer who's fallen

from favor on Broadway, bails Paul out, on the condition that the songwriter compose a score for a show that Alex hopes will put his name back in lights. Alex's undergraduate secretary, Katherine (Nancy Olson), moves in with Paul to insure that he keeps his nose to the grindstone, and in no time,

the tunesmith has shifted his romantic attentions from money-hungry Lorna Marvis (Ruth Hussey) to the pretty coed. The rest of the movie deals with the show they write and produce, with a few cameos by well-knowns--including Peggy Lee, Groucho Marx, and The Merry Macs--added to enhance the marquee

value.

The story is loosely based on Sam Raphaelson's play "Accent on Youth" (which had already been filmed in 1935 as a romance and was filmed again in 1959 as BUT NOT FOR ME) and it's as thin as can be, but that has little to do with the fun engendered by the goings-on. Haydn directs well enough;

however, he never really overcomes the shortcomings of a mild script, and MR. MUSIC remains an enjoyable but minor musical. Songs include: "Life Is So Peculiar" (James Van Heusen, Johnny Burke, sung by Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee, The Merry Macs, reprised by Crosby, Groucho Marx), "Accidents Will

Happen" (Van Heusen, Burke, sung by Crosby, Dorothy Kirsten), "High on the List," "Wouldn't It Be Funny," "Wasn't I There?" "Mr. Music," "Once More the Blue and White," "Milady," and "Then You'll Be Home" (Van Heusen, Burke).
