A visually stunning biography of St. Vincent de Paul, who humbly devoted himself to social work in France and was later canonized for his efforts. A stark, realistic film, MONSIEUR VINCENT follows the young peasant boy born in 1576 from his days of slavery in Algiers to his entry into the

priesthood. Fresnay, one of France's most gifted actors, is perfect in his portrayal, assuming an aura of purity that brought him, and the film, numerous awards. Begun before the Occupation, this picture became Cloche's masterpiece, taking him years to complete because of the Nazi invasion.

Instead of raising the necessary money through normal avenues, Cloche was forced, with the help of many parishes, to fund the picture by selling shares of the profits on a subscription basis. This spiritually moving, gorgeously photographed film won a special Oscar as the "most outstanding

foreign-language film released in the US during 1948." (In French; English subtitles.)
