An exploitation picture disguised as a morality play, MOM AND DAD has a legal history much more interesting than its story. The plot deals with a girl whose mother doesn't tell her about the birds and the bees, so she's easy prey to the first Lothario to come along. When she turns up

pregnant, her mother blames herself and with her daughter leaves town. Concluding scenes are documentary footage of the birth of a baby, followed by some lurid demonstrations of the effects of syphilis. When the film was first released in 1948, the Director of Public Safety for Newark, New Jersey,

tried to revoke the license of the exhibitor, claiming that the film was suitable only for educational purposes. A re-release in 1956 was denied licensing as indecent by the New York State censorship board, although the film was licensed on appeal. In Chicago, in 1958, the film was banned as

obscene and immoral if shown for entertainment--as an educational film it was all right. It is hard now to see what was so offensive about the film. Its low budget look and flat acting would probably put most people to sleep before they'd see anything offensive.
