Striking a new low in sexploitation, MIDNIGHT TEASE is a peep show interrupted by a plot. As brought to life by a cast who seem to be reading cue cards for a 900-number sex ad, this witheringly bad mystery features third-rate striptease acts, gruesome homicides, incest-driven nightmares,

silly police work, and an uncanny knack for deflating any suspense that might build up by accident.

Despite intensive psychotherapy (that will later graduate to intercourse with her shrink) strip-dancer Samantha (Cassandra Leigh) can't rid her troubled mind of visions of childhood sexual abuse, mingled with dreams about assaults on her co-workers at J.J.'s nudie club. Are they merely

nightmares? Waking up in her car in the middle of the night, Samantha is shocked the next morning when stripper Tiffany is discovered dead on the raunchy club's stage. Although the show must go on, only naive bartender trainee Amy (Rachel Reed) seems immune to fear as she persuades Samantha to let

her become her roomie. While Samantha dreams of further carnage, the police suspect everyone from sexist pig J.J. (Todd Joseph), to various clients, to the topless bimbos themselves.

After curvaceous Mantra (Ashlie Rhey) takes her place among the fatalities, Samantha wakes up on her lawn with a knife in her hand. Tender psychiatrist Doctor Saul (Edmund Halley) begins hypnosis sessions, though he's puzzled that Sam's case file is missing and that medications have been stolen

from his office. Meanwhile, another go-go dancer, Dusty (Nicole Grey), drops by Samantha's and learns the murderer's identity the hard way. Decked out in Samantha's costume, psychotic Amy slays Dusty and attacks gullible Samantha. When Dr. Saul figures out the truth about his former receptionist

Amy, he scurries over to his favorite patient's home. Seeing a traumatized Samantha tied up, the shrink tries to reason the knife away from Amy, who slashes him. Although he tranquilizes Amy and begins freeing Samantha, the deranged killer continues to try to kill him until Samantha chokes her

from behind with a cord.

The motive driving the maniac in this tacky erotic thriller is simple: all exotic dancers must die. The whys and wherefores guiding the serial killer receptionist's hand are never once broached, let alone clarified, and narrative logic is, apparently, too much to expect. After all, according to

this scurrilous soft-core flick, shock therapy comprises screwing one's patient to recovery. Even if one dismisses those sleazy S&M acts on the club stage as oversexed performance art, it's hard to overlook the film's fundamental misogyny--not to mention the by-the-numbers direction, a surfeit of

nudie numbers that pad out the film, inept matching of camera angles, and performances that reach the heights of the acting semifinals on a Star Search competition. While low-budget adventures-in-ecstasy traditionally spotlight scantily clad babes ripe for slaughter, MIDNIGHT TEASE dips into a

whole new cesspool by intertwining Samantha's lewd onstage gyrations with hypnosis-induced memories of molestation by her stepfather. Sexual abuse becomes part of the film's repertory of titillation, which is sleazy above and beyond the call of exploitation. (Graphic violence, extreme profanity, extensive nudity, sexual situations.)
