The USSR was not about to be outdone by Warren Beatty's depiction of the life of writer John Reed, REDS, hence the making of MEXICO IN FLAMES. This is the first in a three-part film epic covering the journalist's life, but it falls far short of Beatty's film. Nero is Reed and Andress is

his rich patron and lover. They carry on a torrid romance as he covers labor riots and revolutions during the years 1910 to 1915. Most of the film takes place in Mexico, where Reed chronicles that nation's revolution. The script is so stiff and so full of political rhetoric that it's hard to keep

from laughing at the most serious moments.
