Subways may seem mundane and commonplace nowadays, but at one time they were a novel concept. People had a difficult time with the idea of a train under the ground, and were not quite sure of its safety or value. For millions of commuters, the subways are a lifeline to work and home, and no one gives a second thought to traveling beneath the streets. In this program, the origin of subways is discussed with archival pictures for clarification. The development of underground transport changed the lives of urban workers, and was another technological advance leading to the expansion and efficiency of cities.
