Since his brilliant HIROSHIMA, MON AMOUR, Alain Resnais's experiments with nonlinear structure and the relationship between memory and the past have placed him among the ranks of the greatest directors. In light of these experiments, MELO comes as a shock, a traditionally constructed

linear narrative adapted from a 1929 Parisian stage melodrama written by Henry Bernstein. Deceptively simple in appearance, MELO is the story of two musicians, Marcel Blanc and Pierre Belcroix (Andre Dussollier and Pierre Arditi), whose friendship dates back to their days at the conservatory.

Marcel has gone on to international fame as a soloist while Pierre has settled down in a Parisian suburb to lead a simple life with his wife, Romaine (Sabine Azema). After a quiet evening of drink and reminiscence, Marcel and Romaine begin a passionate affair. Romaine plots to gradually poison the

unsuspecting and good-natured Pierre. Masterfully directed, MELO is both an entertaining romantic melodrama and an extension of Resnais's ideas about memory and imagination, reality and fiction. As in HIROSHIMA, MON AMOUR, Resnais gives us characters whose present is haunted by the past. Only

rarely is a film this simple and this complex.
