Though overrun with cliches, MELANIE is still an entertaining tale. An illiterate Arkansas woman, Melanie Daniel (Glynnis O'Connor), loses custody of her son to her ex-husband, Carl (Don Johnson), and takes off for California, hoping to see the boy. On the way, she drops in on a friend (Trudy Young) who is living with has-been rock star Rick Manning (Burton Cummings, formerly of the Guess Who, in a semi-autobiographical role). Eventually, Rick and Melanie fall in love; their romance is the catalyst Rick needs to become creative again. The film is riddled with formulas, some of which even work--mainly because of the strong performances, especially that of Paul Sorvino as a lawyer who wants to marry Melanie.
