Helena Bonham Carter as the town tramp: If that strikes you as a bit of stretch, you may also have some trouble with the running time of Canadian director Mort Ransen's film about life in a small mining town. Bonham Carter stars as Margaret, the runny-nosed misfit of

Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, a sooty hamlet whose men make their livings -- and more often than not meet their deaths -- in the coal mines. Margaret has already lost both her father and older brother in a mining accident, so when she's courted by drifter Neil (Clive Russell), who's devoted himself to

preserving the region's Celtic heritage, he must first promise to never take a job with the "company," never make her yet another miner's widow. In spite of Bonham Carter's occasionally overzealous performance, every scene is beautifully played, particularly those cut short by the dreaded siren

that signals a cave-in: You can feel the entire town hold its breath. There are simply too many scenes. Two-thirds of the way through the film, each character has reached the point of maximum saturation, and the rest of the film is fat that should have been trimmed. No doubt Ransen meant the

grisly conclusion to stun, but by the time it rolls around, you've been expecting it for way too long to be shocked.
