Quinn is an uneducated Mexican gunfighter hired as the sheriff of Mesa. Believing that the job gives him the dignity and respect he needs, Quinn buys new clothes and attempts to join in the town's activities only to find that the townspeople look down upon him--they just want his quick gun

when it's needed. Whitney, the saloon owner, figures that he can use Quinn to gain control of the town. When the sheriff breaks his wrist in a brawl, Whitney makes his move. He calls Quinn out for a showdown, but when Quinn removes the bandage from his wrist, Whitney backs down. Shown to be a

coward, the saloon owner is thrown out of town. Quinn also wins the affections of Jurado. Quinn's performance, which added an extra dimension to the character, raises this western above the standard fare.
