Spanish director Julio Medem's dreamy and deeply romantic third feature explores the different ways history can appear to repeat itself, even for a pair of lovers who think they know something about the past. A wayward soccer ball leads to a lifetime of longing for Otto (Peru Medem), an eight-year-old schoolboy who falls deeply in love with Ana (Sara Valiente), the young girl whom he meets outside his school playground school. In Ana, Otto thinks he has met his destiny, the single element that will eventually make the circle of his life complete. In Otto, Ana's sure she has found her father, who died the day before; a strong believer in coincidences, Ana thinks her father has somehow returned to her in the shape of this little boy. But she doesn't love Otto — at least not yet. The two grow up as step-siblings (in one of the film's many odd

coincidences, Ana's widowed mother and Otto's divorced father meet and marry) and eventually become lovers, all the while replaying a scenario that once occurred fifty years earlier to Otto's grandfather. Or so they think. Filled with romantic longings, bizarre happenings and cruel twists of fate,

Medem's film is a successful mix of melodrama and mystical fantasy. Events occur and recur, coincidences nearly happen and years fly by in the time it takes a car to lurch to a stop. Whether or not Medem's metaphysical ruminations really ever cohere into anything other than an entertaining

brain-teaser isn't really the point. His film is stylish, full of intriguing little details — including the main characters' palindromic first names — and totally engrossing. (In Spanish, with English subtitles.)
