This top-notch thriller provides some brilliantly theatrical acting by Harding and Rathbone, who parry and thrust in a game of deadly wits. Carol Howard (Harding) is a sweet, unsuspecting lady of beauty and refinement who wins a lottery while on a European vacation. A short time later, she

encounters the suave and charming Gerald Lovell (Rathbone) who walks her to the altar. Gerald uses some of Carol's money to buy a luxurious home in the country, and all seems blissful until he quite casually asks Carol to sign a document, claiming it is a mortgage transfer. The document, if

signed, would turn over her entire fortune to her husband. It's cat and mouse time.

Rathbone is both charming and frightening in his sophisticated role, and this film remains one of his finest. Harding is also excellent as the victim desperate to preserve her life. This was the American actress's first British film after eight years of Hollywood stardom. All the vagaries and

nuances of the original Agatha Christie story remain intact, and Lee's direction and Marion's script shine.
