Four prostitutes (Signoret, Rovere, Milo, Riva) are forced to go into the restaurant business when the brothels of Rome are closed down by official order. The women strike a deal with landlord Gora to buy a run-down restaurant with their savings. He agrees to use his name to buy their

food license on the condition that they also run a small brothel upstairs. The restaurant is a success due to the best efforts of the ladies, but soon trouble develops in their personal lives that threatens the business. Signoret falls in love with a car salesman, Mastroianni, who is actually

using her to further his career. Rovere falls in love with a young man and makes plans to marry and quit the business to settle down. Riva takes her daughter out of a foster home to live with her. Only Milo maintains a lifestyle uncomplicated by responsibilities. Soon their lives collapse due to

Gora's insistence that they return to prostitution. Signoret learns of Mastroianni's unfaithfulness; Rovere is trapped into admitting her profession to her boy friend; Riva is forced to return her child to the foster home; and the food license is revoked. The women decide to get their revenge by

trashing the building, but it is only a momentary victory, because they are faced with the reality of having to walk the streets again.
