Japanese drama directed by Shindo, one of the first Japanese filmmakers to deal directly with the horrible aftermath of the nuclear bomb. Kanze stars as a respected drama teacher who has gone to his mountain villa for a vacation. He lives alone, seeing only his housekeeper, a war widow

from the local village. One day, Kanze spots two young lovers embracing and tells Otowa of his sexual frustration. He explains that he has been impotent ever since he was caught in the bomb blast at Hiroshima while stationed there during the war. Though a nurse aided him in regaining his virility

so that he could marry, he soon became impotent again and was divorced. Sympathetic to his plight, Otowa suggests that he observe a custom practiced in the village every spring. The custom entails that men of the village sneak into the bedrooms of available women and have sex with them. Otowa

invites Kanze into her bedroom to witness. When three men attempt to enter her home, Kanze becomes aroused and prevents them from entering. The next evening he disguises himself, enters her room, and is finally able to make love. This is repeated night after night until Kanze suddenly becomes

convinced that Otowa is having other affairs. He confronts her with his suspicions and then leaves the village. In autumn Kanze returns to the village and learns that Otowa has died due to a tubal pregnancy. He also discovers that she had hired men in the village to simulate the spring ritual in

order to arouse Kanze. Learning that her reputation in the village was beyond reproach, the guilt-ridden and remorseful Kanze stands alone watching the snows cover the mountains.
