Japanese melodrama based on a novel written by controversial and frequently brilliant author Yukio Mishima. Asaoka plays a young widow living on her husband's family estate. Nakamura, her widowed father-in-law, is remarried and supporting his wife and his second son. Nakamura is enamored

with Asaoka and frequently forces himself on her. Lonely, isolated, and trapped, Asaoka looks for escape through a relationship with one of the estate's gardeners, Ishitachi. Her obsession is obvious to everyone in the household but Ishitachi himself, and when Asaoka discovers that he has gotten a

servant girl pregnant, she forces the woman to get rid of her child. Driven somewhat mad by the futility of her existence, Asaoka orders Ishitachi into the greenhouse where she informs him of the death of his baby. Nakamura suddenly appears with a gun to shoot his rival, but when Ishitachi

expresses joy over the news, Asaoka shoots him. Nakamura and Asaoka bury the body and she then flees the estate.
