Becker is separated from his Jewish parents when the Germans invade Poland. The young man joins the Polish partisans while his parents are taken to the concentration camps. His father is killed after being determined "unfit," and his mother is moved from one labor camp to another. After the

war, the son and mother reunite and must find a new homeland. This was the first film made in West Germany after WW II. Author Becker plays the lead well, and the professional cast does nicely. Several Yiddish folk tunes are included. (In Yiddish, German, Polish; English subtitles.)
