In 1941 a British army searchlight unit is staffed with a group of zanies, including a girl-chaser, a cook, a nice, if stupid, officer, and other assorted characters. Interspersed with their various cutups are moments of war-time tragedy. Episodic and ultimately plotless, the film is also pointless. Comedian Hill exhibits the form that would later make him a popular television star in both the UK and US. Gilbert, who directed the fine SINK THE BISMARK!, seems to have little interest in this material, but it is occasionally amusing.
