Originally made in 1955, LE AMICHE was not shown in the US until L'AVVENTURA had established Antonioni as an important figure in the international cinema. Without relying too heavily upon plot or story development, Antonioni delves deep beneath the exteriors of his characters to explore

their mental makeup. The opening scene has Rossi-Drago returning from Rome to her hometown of Turin, where she becomes involved with a group of the local young fashionables. She attempts to have an affair with a young architect, Manni, but ends it when she becomes convinced that a permanent

relationship with him will only result in a life of poverty. Her friends include Ferzetti, an artist who is married to Cortese but is also having an affair with Fischer. Fischer commits suicide when Ferzetti announces that his art means more to him than his women, and eventually Rossi-Drago

returns to Rome after she is fired from her job. LE AMICHE is an example in the development of Antonioni's style that would reach its fulfillment in L'AVVENTURA and LA NOTTE. A concern with man's psychological relationship to an isolated environment is the prime factor in establishing this

approach.
