LADY DRAGON 2 is not martial arts star Cynthia Rothrock's finest hour; once primed to be the female equivalent of Bruce Lee or Jean-Claude van Damme, Cynthia now seems more like the female Chuck Norris--the legs are powerful but the charisma muscles are weak.
Having murdered Mafiosi to pilfer millions of dollars worth of diamonds for their drug-lord boss Eduardo, three thugs--Diego (Billy Drago), Reb (Sam Jones), and Jack (Greg Stuart)--stash their booty and escape from the Mob and the Law. The vicious but buffoonish trio hide the hot gems in the
suitcase of Jakartan soccer star, Sonny Sumarto (George Rudy), then invade the mansion he shares with his kickboxing champion wife, Kathy (Rothrock). Reb and Jack torture Sonny while Diego rapes Kathy, and although they don't get any information out of Sonny, they do damage his soccer prospects by
knifing his leg. After the Sumartos' unbalanced maid, Sari (Bella Esperance), frightens away the jewel thieves with a rifle, Kathy ignores official police advice from Captain Anton (Adiscerya Abdi) and goes into vigilante overdrive.
Kathy is disturbed when Sonny, now wheelchair-bound, reveals that he hid the diamonds in order to help his people. Increasingly antsy about retrieving the gems (lest they be fed to their master's pet piranha), the cretinous trio embark on a terror campaign against Kathy and Sonny while acquiring
an unlikely ally in the person of Sari, who wearies of a maid's life after sex with Diego. After the bad boys finish the job they started on Sonny (whose death makes him a folk hero), Kathy takes the law into her own talented legs. She beats Jack to death in an elevator, and crushes Reb to death
with freight transport equipment. Using the compliant Sari as bait, Diego lures Kathy to a deserted train yard. Shocked by Sari's betrayal, Kathy is nonetheless able to step out of the path of Diego's speeding car, which flattens Sari. Following a car chase and another rape attempt, Kathy stabs
Diego in the groin, then pushes him into a conveniently available blast furnace.
Needlessly nasty, LADY DRAGON 2 does little to elevate Rothrock to full Kung Fu Queendom. Clearly her best career interests are not served by appearing in poorly shot, ineptly written vehicles that employ standard "Go Get 'em, Girl" plotlines. Was that disgustingly vivid rape scene really
necessary, when it only serves to make Sonny seem like a jerk? Not only are the revenge elements tiresome, but the film's main selling point--Rothrock's martial arts exhibitions--are listlessly choreographed and dully directed. Without exciting action sequences that pack a wallop, a martial arts
movie has no point. Here the stuntmen seem to be standing still awaiting Lady Dragon's every kick. (Extensive violence, profanity, sexual situations.)
