Crabbe follows the lead of fellow Olympic swimmer Johny Weissmuller and plays a human raised by jungle beasts in darkest Africa. Instead of apes, Crabbe is raised by lions after the death of his photographer parents. The campy plot doesn't give any of the basics such as how Crabbe was

raised by the overgrown kitties, but that doesn't matter. This is good old escapism with lots of beefcake for the female audience. When Crabbe is caught with his lion friends by some circus people, he's brought back to the States by boat (he's listed as "What Is It" on the passenger list) but

jumps ship and shows off his swimming prowess. Crabbe finally arrives in New York, runs around in his leopard skin loin cloth, learns English with amazing ease from love interest Dee and, of course, lives happily ever after. The spectacular climax where wild animals escape during a fire and roam

the panic-stricken streets of New York, with elephants turning over buses and the clawing of a woman by a striped cat, provided Cecil B. de Mille with part of the magnificent train wreck scene in THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. Crabbe had screen tested for MGM's TARZAN THE APE MAN but settled for this

instead. He later achieved plenty of fame in the great serial FLASH GORDON. Cheerfully dumb, with some great animal footage, this film is fun for both kids and camp connoisseurs.
