A realistic look at growing up in postwar Norway, KAMILLA tells the story of two seven-year-olds who are deeply affected by the decisions of their parents. Knapskog is a glowing young girl caught in the turmoil of her parents' failing marriage. Her father, Jordal, has taken up with his

opportunistic shop assistant and dreams of finding a new life in America. Knapskog is left with her mother, Lokkeberg, who is living on some money that Jordal has stashed away. Knapskog, unable to find the attention she needs among adults, becomes best friends with a neighboring boy, Johansen, who

also lives alone with his mother. Together they begin unraveling the little mysteries that occupy children's imaginations, but before long Johansen is sent away to an orphanage. KAMILLA is a lyrical and gritty picture, beautifully acted by its two young stars and by Lokkeberg, as the mother who

dearly loves her daughter but is unable to express it. Lokkeberg also directed this film and wrote the screenplay with her husband, producer Kristiansen. (In Norwegian; English subtitles.)
