Uneven, mean-spirited, but with some juicy acting. Alan King plays tycoon Max Herschel (some say based on Ray Stark), who is married to the alcoholic, philandering Connie (Dina Merrill).

He maintains liaisons on the side, particularly with Bones Burton (MacGraw, doing the best work of her career), a television producer with whom he has dallied for a long time and who marries Steven Routledge (Peter Weller), a Sam Shepard-like playwright. Myrna Loy is Max's longtime secretary,

Stella, who is totally devoted to her boss and privy to all his business and personal involvements; a subplot involves Max's business enemy, an oldtime film potentate (Keenan Wynn), whose gay son (Tony Roberts) is jockeying to become an executive at a major studio.

Your opinion of the film depends on whether or not you can tap into the sacre monstre King expertly plays, and the New York Jewish "angst" inherent in the screenplay's erratic pace (the second half looks poorly edited), but there are some very funny scenes and all the parts are richly acted. A

curious little sleeper.
