Trintignant, Fulton, and Riviere are mining engineers whose helicopter is forced down in the Sahara by a storm. They land near a nuclear test site and save local sheik Nazzari's life. He leads them to a secret cave which is the entrance to the lost city of Atlantis. Harareet, the queen of

Atlantis, takes a cruel liking to her unexpected guests. When Riviere tries to escape, she turns him into a golden statue. Fulton also tries to get away, and is killed by Trintignant, who has come under Harareet's power. A slave girl (Rubini) falls in love with Trintignant and helps him escape

before a nuclear bomb destroys the city. The film moves slowly and is quite dull. The American release, which has the additional handicap of poor dubbing, suffers from a clear lack of direction. The project was started by Borzage, but he was soon replaced by Ulmer (who also served as production

designer) and Masini. Though Ulmer had a good reputation for science-fiction films, he could not save this one. But it has some nice visual effects, particularly in the tunnel of the secret cave. Released in Rome in 1961, the film was not shown in the US until 1967. The story had been filmed at

least three times before: L'ATLANTIDE, by the French in 1921; DIE HERREN VON ATLANTIS, by the Germans in 1932; and SIREN OF ATLANTIS, in the US in 1948.
