Laurel and Hardy find themselves stranded on a desert road after their car has run out of gas. Along comes swindler Bailey (a nice guy at heart), rescuing the pair and enlisting their help in his carnival con game--selling pills that supposedly turn water into gasoline. Performing as a

two-man jitterbug band, the boys draw potential customers, including love interest Blaine. Her mother has been cheated in a land deal, and Bailey and the guys agree to help out, traveling with her to New Orleans in the hope of catching the crooks. Blaine gets a gig singing on a showboat owned by

one of the real estate swindlers, Laurel disguises himself as Blaine's Boston aunt, and Hardy adopts the guise of a charming southern millionaire. They manage to retrieve the money, but the crooks soon catch on. Bailey saves the day, arriving with the police, as Laurel and Hardy tumble into the

river. Though short on the usual Laurel and Hardy brand of slapstick and nowhere near the quality of their marvelous short films, JITTERBUGS is the best of the duo's later features. Yet, the film really belongs to Blaine. The studio was using it as a showcase for the newly discovered talent,

giving her three songs during the riverboat nightclub sequences. Kudos to Basevi for his art direction.
