A wonderful study of a group of peasants operating a country tavern in the French countryside. The illustriously nicknamed inhabitants are shaken when Schutz, "The Emperor," suddenly takes ill, even though he is 106 years old. They are also jolted by a robbery, the murder of Kerjean, "Ten

Drops," and a romance between Rollin and Brunoy. Second only to Renoir in his realistic portrayal of humanity, Becker was respected in his native country by the enthusiastic New Wave, who offered him great praise. While many criticized his work (his masterpiece CASQUE D'OR was a failure in

France), director Francois Truffaut became one of his most stalwart proponents, writing in 1960: "Essentially he wanted to achieve an exactitude of tone, refining it more and more until it became evident, clear...Since he was on guard against the exceptional, he constantly imagined himself in the

place of his characters, and quite naturally, he began to trace his own portrait from film to film." This picture contains some of the earliest sketches of Becker's "portrait." (In French; English subtitles.)
