Differing considerably from the first film version of W.R. Burnett's boxing novel, this loose, relatively satisfying remake of THE IRON MAN stars Jeff Chandler as Coke Mason, a poor coal miner who is desperate to leave the mines and marry his girl friend, Rose (Evelyn Keyes). Hoping to

earn enough money to buy a small radio shop, he becomes a prizefighter, but when he enters the ring he is transformed into a savage beast, administering terrible beatings to his opponents that turn crowds against him and that worry both Rose and Coke's older brother, George (Stephen McNally), who

serves as his manager. They try to persuade him to hang up his gloves, but it is only when Coke is forced to fight his best friend (Rock Hudson) that he quells his killer instinct, winning the respect of the crowd and his loved ones. Director Joseph Pevney moves the story along at a rapid clip and

is greatly aided by a strong cast of supporting players, including Jim Backus as a sportswriter.
