Swanson is a lady with a past. She meets writer Lyon, who refuses to listen to her stories of former affairs. Enter Lyon's sister with her new fiance, who is a former lover of Swanson's. Swanson tries to break up the romance and almost succeeds in destroying her new love with Lyon in the

process. Swanson had misgivings about this film, and for good reason: the plot and songs are weak. But when Lyon was signed as costar and McCarey as director (the latter getting his big break with this picture), Swanson agreed to do it. Everyone gave it their best, but it doesn't quite make it.

Lake is capable in his comic role of the fiance, but the rest of the cast is wasted. Swanson sings a few numbers, including "Come to Me," but her initial fears unfortunately proved right. This was her first film for United Artists, after declining Paramount's offer of a guaranteed $1 million a

year.
