Zalman King, of Red Shoe Diaries fame, pays shaky homage to the search for the perfect wave, following a trio of world-class surfers who have abandoned the pro-surfing circuit for their own personal quests. Strong, silent, quasi-mystical Shane (Patrick Shane

Dorian) is the best surfer in the group. Mickey (Matt George) is the loquacious, past-his-prime adventurer and Keoni (Matty Liu) is the youngster. A surfing writer (Shaun Thompson) follows the thrill seekers around, documenting their exploits and playing guardian angel when they get into scrapes.

Their travels take them from Madagascar (where they get tossed into jail after Mickey puts the moves on a local lass) to Bali, where they train with a bunch of extreme surfers, and finally to Hawaii. Best known as a purveyor of high-class erotica, King takes a detour into the 95 percent sex-free

territory pioneered by THE ENDLESS SUMMER and its 1994 sequel. The photography is gorgeous, and King romanticizes the wave jocks in a series of long, elegiac scenes: He even manages to wring a frisson from the image of a surfer's hand gracefully caressing a wave. But King runs into trouble when

he asks us to get serious about the plotless shell of a story and the thinly drawn characters. On the other hand, it's truly refreshing to see a movie whose only villain is the big wipe out.
