Set in New Zealand during the late 19th century when that country's gold rush was in its waning days, this film focuses on three Chinese miners (Chin, Bao, and Ip) who are determined to keep at it until they strike it rich. When they eventually do find the treasure they seek, however,

their problems are far from over. This is a fascinating study of immigrant experience in which director Narbey's attention to detail is superb and the cinematography of the wilds of New Zealand stunning. In other respects, however, the film isn't quite so successful. Most notably, the Hong

Kong-based leading players fight something of a losing battle with English; and much of their heavily accented dialog is undecipherable, resulting in the loss of many of the film's finer points. Nonetheless Bao and Ip give impassioned performances, with the latter particularly memorable as the

frightened, superstitious old man.
