A hip-hop Cheech and Chong picture crossed with ANIMAL HOUSE that's about as cheerfully vulgar as you might expect. Rappers Method Man and Redman star as Silas and Jamal, two homeboys who've smoked more ganja than most people have had hot meals, but nonetheless aspire to higher education — no pun intended. As the film begins, Silas's stoner buddy Ivory (Chuck Davis) has just died in an unfortunate pot-related accident and Silas has scattered his ashes over a marijuana plant he's growing in his living room. Ivory always encouraged Silas to go to medical school, so Silas decides to take his college entrance exam out of respect for his dead buddy. Jamal, who's been kicked out of the house by his mom for getting expelled from junior college, is also about to take the exam. They meet in the parking lot, smoke the Ivory weed and presto — Ivory's ghost appears. Turns out Ivory knows every smart dead guy since the beginning of time, which puts him in a position to slip his buds the right answers on their exams and get them into Harvard University, where Chancellor Huntley (Fred Willard) is eager to introduce qualified minority students into the school's population. With the aid of the Ivory dope, Silas and Jamal excel at their studies. But when the plant is stolen, they're in big trouble. The rest of the plot mostly involves Silas and Jamal running afoul of various uptight preppies and authority figures, notably the amusingly named Dean Cain (Obba Babbatundé) — get it? They also find time to romance the girls of their dreams, including Jamie (Essence Atkins), the beautiful and inexplicably black daughter of a school vice-presidential candidate (Jeffrey Jones), and of course there's a de rigeur frat party that gets out of hand, a big nerds-losing-their-virginity sequence and countless pot jokes. Obviously, none of this is terribly original, so it's a good thing the two rappers are such utterly natural actors, armed with terrific comic timing. There's also some amusing casting around the fringes, including a cameo by Spaulding Gray (of all people) as a guilty white liberal professor teaching a Black History course.
