City gangsters move West in hopes of expanding their operations. They put muscle on the area ranchers, but who should come along but vacationing movie cowboy O'Brien. He finds his vacation is no vacation as he must play real-life cowboy now to save the ranchers. What could have been corny

and hackneyed is saved by a sense of humor and a wonderful performance by O'Brien. O'Brien, who became a superstar western hero in John Ford's silent classic THE IRON HORSE, had been a boxing champion in the Navy and was a rugged outdoorsman who rode a horse and used a lariat with the best of

them. He signed with RKO only a year before HOLLYWOOD COWBOY was released, a film that typified his career, but an oater with unusual touches in that airplanes are used to stampede cattle and Chicago gangsters invade the West to establish a protection racket for cattlemen, cutting themselves in on

livestock profits. O'Brien would do twenty westerns for RKO within four years, this being his third for that studio.
