Never veering from a story course the audience has traveled many times before, HIS BODYGUARD holds one's attention due to the charisma of the leading players and the film's central gimmick: a deaf witness to murder. Deficient in actual mystery, HIS BODYGUARD works best as an off-beat
romance between a female police detective and the recalcitrant client who initially resents her protection.
During a theft of the powerful drug Alpha 10 from Rollston Labs, a guard is shot to death. Research scientist Al (Robert Bockstael), one of the Rollston insiders who planned the heist, cannot dissuade his outside partner Feld (Michael Copeman) from planning to kill eyewitness Sam Rollston (Anthony
Natale), the son of the lab's owner, Mr. Rolston (Robin Gammell). The only thief Sam saw was Feld.
Because Sam is deaf, cop Jenny Farrell (Mitzi Kapture), who has sign language skills (albeit rusty), is involved in the case by her friend, Garrett (Robert Guillaume), the head of Rollston Lab's security staff. Despite Jenny's suspicion that the crime was masterminded as an insurance scam by Sam's
financially strapped father Mr. Rollston, Sam warms up to Jenny. He even saves her life when Feld and a thug storm into her apartment to attack Sam.
Jenny foolishly mentions to Al that Sam is hiding at a school for the deaf, which is then invaded by Feld and his cronies. During their hunt for Sam, Al gets electrocuted; Jenny and Sam flee to her parents' cabin. Unfortunately, Jenny reports her whereabouts to Garrett, who is the other insider
who planned the theft with Al. On the grounds of Jenny's property, Garrett has a change of heart; Garrett and Feld's gunsel shoot each other to death. As Jenny grapples with Feld, Sam grabs his gun and shoots him.
Since Garrett's involvement in the crime becomes apparent too quickly, disappointed mystery buffs will have to make do with a "different worlds" romance. Anthony Natale cuts a compelling figure as sexy, silent Sam, who is ferociously touchy about his deafness. Striking sparks with him is luscious
Mitzi Kapture (a cult favorite for her work on TV's "Silk Stalkings"); their sexual chemistry adds some intensity to the standard run-for-your-life staples. Although, as a crime thriller, the film has all the kick of sarsaparilla, HIS BODYGUARD scores high marks as a persuasive love story.
