home to the arms of Madison, a former boy friend. His spiteful and domineering mother, Varden, disapproves of his marriage to Simmons and stages a fake heart attack that ends up being the real thing. After Varden's death, the two marry, but Madison is haunted by his mother's death. Lonely and

frustrated, Simmons enters into an affair with a French author, Aumont. Madison discovers the two in a hotel room, thus breaking up the affair. Simmons attempts suicide soon after, but things change as Madison gives up his guilty feelings and becomes a better husband.
