Trevor Nunn and the Royal Shakespeare Company turn Ibsen's brooding classic into movie suds--all that's missing is Bette Davis. Glenda Jackson plays Hedda Gabler, who despises her professor husband but will stop at nothing to ensure his promotion. Boredom, fear of social stagnation, and

existential terror drive Hedda as she takes advantage of old friends, steals a manuscript from her husband's rival (Patrick Stewart), and then urges him to do away with himself. Stewart is good, as is Timothy West as Tesman; Jackson is, as always, a matter of taste.
