John Smallwood (Peter Sellers) is a prison chaplain who is appointed in error as the pastor of a wealthy church in an English industrial city. The man who was to have been given this plum parish (Ian Carmichael) is a fawning toady who would be quite content to mirror the desires of the

rich parishioners. Instead, they get Smallwood, a man with progressive social convictions and the courage to carry them out. This British comedy makes its satirical points gently without belaboring the issue, and Sellers is totally believable as the simple, guileless man who only wants the best

for his flock. Just about every supporting role is perfectly cast, with special kudos to Miles Malleson as a deranged psychiatrist and Cecil Parker as an archdeacon. The film's message seems to be that charity, no matter how Christian, is difficult to bestow and even more difficult to accept in

the 20th century.
