Golden Gloves Reviews

When sportswriter Wally Matson (Robert Paige) sets up an unsullied boxing tournament to compete with the corrupt professional game, no-good Joe Taggerty (J. Carrol Naish) bribes Pete Wells (Robert Ryan), a professional fighter, to enter and ruin the competition. Virtue triumphs, however, when Wells' opponent, Bill Crane (Richard Denning), defeats him, inspired by the pretty Mary Parker (Jean Cagney, you know who's sister). In an attempt to cash in on the growing popularity of amateur boxing, this film was released with a short, GOLDEN GLOVES. Ryan, who makes one of his first film appearances here, boxed collegiately at Dartmouth.
