Set in Stockton, California, against a backdrop of run-down bars, cheap apartments and half-empty second rate gyms, FAT CITY is a grim story of hope and despair among life's losers.

Billy Tully (Stacy Keach), a 29-year-old one-time boxing contender, contemplates a comeback after nearly two years of alcoholism brought about by the loss of both his wife and the biggest fight of his career. He meets Ernie Munger (Jeff Bridges), a promising 19-year-old, and encourages him to hook

up with Billy's old manager (Nicholas Colasanto). This Ernie does and so begins his own boxing career. Billy, however, continues boozing and his personal and professional lives continue their downward trajectory.

Adapted by Leonard Gardner from his own novel and brilliantly directed by John Huston, who was himself once an amateur champion, FAT CITY is both an extraordinarily realistic look at the bottom rungs of the fight game and a moving exploration of the human condition. Keach, Bridges, Tyrrell (who

received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the alcoholic Oma, Billy's temporary girlfriend), and all the supporting players give first-rate performances. All in all, this strong downbeat film, which makes appropriate use of Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It through the Night," is never

less than captivating.
